“Iran Will Never Negotiate…”

I was planning to write about something positive and uplifting for a change. Maybe Obama’s speech to schoolkids.

Instead, I am forced to turn back to the ugliest story developing anywhere in our world. The newly re-installed (through a clumsy whitewash of an election) president of Iran is back in the news, on the eve of a US-set September deadline for serious progress on stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons program. To encourage progress on the issue, our President Obama has been tactfully and diplomatically silent about the stolen election, the arrest, beatings, and murder of Iranian democrats, the threats against Israel’s very existence, and the other human rights atrocities that are Ahmadinejad’s daily bread.  We remain silent in order to avoid giving Mr. A reason to turn against us.

And how is that working so far, you ask? Here is today’s AP story:

“Ahmadinejad: Iran ‘Will Never Negotiate Over Nuclear Rights’”

“President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Monday Iran will neither halt uranium enrichment nor negotiate over its nuclear rights but is ready to sit and talk with world powers over ‘global challenges.’”

There you have it. Iran is ready to negotiate with us over the fate of the rest of the world. But its nukes, and what it plans to do with them, is none of our business.

Bottom Line:

1. Iran is working around the clock to develop nuclear weapons.

2. Iran’s official policy is that Israel must be swept into the sea.

3. President Obama campaigned among American Jews and friends of Israel by declaring that Iranian nukes were unacceptable and would not be allowed.

4. Obama promised to achieve this through constructive engagement with Iran’s leaders.

5. The present policy of diplomatic initiatives and moderate sanctions has been pursued by the European Union for years, and by the US since Obama’s election. Successive deadlines have come and gone without effect on Iran, which has used the time gained to pursue its nuclear weapons development unhindered.

6. Sanctions cannot work while Russia and China, Iran’s neighbors and UN Security Council veto-holding members, continue to support Iran’s leaders and policy.

7. Obama’s diplomacy was intended to play to “Iranian moderates”; but all candidates in the recent election supported Ahmadinejad’s policy on nuclearization.

Obama, like too many Democrats these days, has concluded that our national security is not in any way linked to the security of our allies and fellow democracies around the world, and that appeasement will turn hostile tyrannies into friends.

So here we are again. A power-mad leader of a powerful country with a chip on its shoulder and an ideology that blames Jews for all the world’s problems, is preparing a “final solution.” 6 million Jews sit in the crosshairs. And the world, including our own country, is doing NOTHING!

Since Hitler’s Holocaust, the Western world has piously intoned, over and over, the mantra “Never Again”. But it is now clear that it was only a pious, feel-good slogan.

If we let this new Holocaust happen, then truly “We are weighed in the balance, and found wanting.”
